Pool Closure Update

Pool Closure Update

For Immediate ReleasePICTOU COUNTY, NS, Wednesday October 14, 2020

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Pictou County Wellness Centre and the Pictou County YMCA, we wish to provide an update regarding the status of the YMCA Pool Closure.

On Thursday, October 1st the Pictou County Wellness Centre and YMCA were forced to close due to a mechanical issue that ultimately lead to water entering the control area of YMCA pool.  As a result, various equipment was exposed to water and had to be decommissioned until it was safe to restore power.

Over the past week we have been working with suppliers and industry technicians to assess the damage and create and action plan to restore the equipment needed to reopen the pool.  Unfortunately, this process is taking longer than we had hoped and the pool must remain temporarily closed.  We are committed to reopening the pool as soon as it is possible, however our first priority is ensuring the safety of our users and staff.  Our second priority is resolving the issue permanently so we must take the necessary steps to ensure that this situation does not occur again.  At this time we are unable to give a firm date on when the pool will reopen but we know it will be at least another 4-6 weeks before everything is back up and running.

We understand how important the pool is to this community and to our members so we apologize for the disruption in service and the inconvenience this may cause.  The Board of Directors for both the Pictou County Wellness Centre and Pictou County YMCA want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to provide access to the YMCA pool and all its aquatic services.  With this in mind, we have partnered with the Pictou County Pool to provide temporary aquatic programing to YMCA members.  Staring November 1st, the YMCA will be relocating some of their aquatic programming to the Pictou Pool.  YMCA members will be able to access programming at the Pictou Fisheries Training Pool through their current memberships at no additional cost.  The YMCA will be communicating more details regarding this arrangement to their members directly.

Moving forward the Pictou County Wellness Centre and YMCA will continue to work on reopening the pool and will provide regular updates as they become available.
